The Psychophysiologic Disorders Association is Launched (2)

Continuing the discussion from the last post of the launch of the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association (PPDA), which plans to become the leading source of evidence-based information about PPD for health care professionals and the public.  Potential donors will be interested in our plans for the future and how their money will be used.

Continuing the theme from the last post, our pathways for growth will be presented in reverse order, beginning with the most long-term goal and working back in a series of dependent steps, to our current situation.  But first, a few ideas that underlie our thinking.

Assumptions

1.  It is likely that at least 90% of PPD patients currently are managed by Medical Clinicians (MC)

2. Approximately 90% of the expertise needed for the best quality management of PPD patients is found in Mental Health Professionals (MHP).

3. Successful relief of PPD in the greatest number of people will depend on collaboration via Referral Networks that enable PPD patients to move from MC to MHP.

4. Shifting care from MC to MHP will require:

  • Training MC and MHP in Core Diagnostic Principles (CDP) and a common terminology (CT)
  • Training MHP in Core Therapeutic Principles (CTP).

Pathways for Growth

Step 8:  The PPDA is recognized as the leading source of evidence-based training and information for diagnosis and treatment of PPD.  We are well funded and staffed and capable of expanding our work toward all the Objectives, Goals and Strategies listed below.  Our success draws financial and volunteer support from health care professionals and the public.

Step 7: We acquire diverse, stable sources of funding sufficient to hire paid staff that enable the PPDA to:

  • Develop training conferences in cities around the U.S. for which we are authorized to provide Continuing Education credit for physicians and mental health professionals.  (In 2011-12 we are limited to what a small volunteer Board can accomplish.)
  • Raise funds from individuals, foundations, corporations, & government
  • Maintain the website
  • Regularly produce newsletters with content for each of our three major stakeholders (MC, MHP, Public) to be written by PPD experts we recruit (clinicians and lay public).
  • Engage in other forms of PR including print and broadcast media
  • Have an office

Step 6: We solicit grants from Charitable Foundations, Corporations (Health Insurance, Pharmaceuticals), the Government and Individuals.  Donors are aware of our documented success in creating functioning PPD Referral Networks among MC and MHP (see Steps 7 & 6.)  The big trend in philanthropy today is documentation of business-like cost-effectiveness.  Bill Gates and Warren Buffett promote this concept as do three recent books (Leap of Reason, Give Smart and Do More Than Give).  Consistent with that trend, the PPDA will seek evidence of our impact on practice.

Steps 1-5 are described in the next post.  To make a contribution that is tax deductible for US citizens to the fullest extent permissible by law, go to the website or make checks payable to the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association and mail to:
