The Psychophysiologic Disorders Association is Launched (3)

Continuing the review from the last post of Pathways for Growth for the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association (PPDA).

Pathways for Growth (cont’d)

Step 5: We publish the Core Diagnostic Principles (CDP), Common Terminology (CT) and Core Therapeutic Principles (CTP) and the success (when we achieve it) of the PPD Referral Network(s) in a peer-reviewed journal, possibly the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association journal.

Step 4: We document the success of PPD Referral Networks by conducting a two-question email survey of people who attend our training conferences at six and twelve months after the conference.  We obtain estimates of the monthly number of referrals and qualitative impressions of patient’s outcomes compared to pre-Network (better, worse, same).

Step 3: We present training conferences, including one already scheduled with NYU on Saturday, October 6, 2012, for both Medical Clinicians (MC) and Mental Health Professionals (MHP).  Expenses here are significant for acquiring address lists, then creating and mailing brochures, renting the venue etc.  The conference will have the following components:

  • Training MC & MHP in Core Diagnostic Principles (CDP) and Common Terminology (CT)
  • Creation of a PPD Referral Network among attendees (with option to decline), advising of the planned post-conference survey of its results.
  • Training MHP in Core Therapeutic Principles (CTP) (optional for MC)
  • Prepare a conference schedule flexible enough to satisfy the interests of both MHP and MC.

Step 2: We complete the CDP, CT and CTP as the primary teaching material at our conferences.  As the PPDA, we should define our role as grafting our special expertise onto the existing practice of otherwise experienced clinicians.  We should focus our teaching on how to help PPD patients uncover the links between their physical symptoms and one or more forms of psychosocial stress such as child abuse, current life stresses, poor self-care skills, trauma, depression or anxiety.  Once these links are found, MHPs can use their prior training and experience to treat the causative issues though for some problems the PPDA can offer additional guidance.  It remains to be seen how much time is needed to teach this material.

Step 1: Another significant expense is our web site intended to:

  • Provide diagnostic and treatment information for MHP, MC and the PPD Public
  • Facilitate registration for the training conferences
  • Facilitate annual donations
  • List contact information for members of PPD Referral Networks
  • Link with information resources for the public
  • Link with a Facebook page
